About BirdWatching

BirdWatching is the premier magazine about wild birds and birding in North America.

We publish the work of columnists and contributors, including David Sibley, Kenn Kaufman, Pete Dunne, and Laura Erickson, who are among the most celebrated names in birding. We feature in-depth articles, bird-ID insights, hotspot reports, and high-quality photography that inspire and instruct an audience of avid birders as they seek to better understand birds.

Ecologist and ornithologist Eldon Greij, an emeritus professor at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, had a bolt-of-lightning idea one night in November 1980 about the need for a high-quality magazine for birdwatchers. He spent the next several years developing the plans for what was then known as Birder’s World, and in early 1987, the first issue was published with 13,667 subscribers. The famed field-guide author Roger Tory Peterson was among the magazine’s original supporters. In 2012, then-editor Chuck Hagner looked back at the magazine’s first 25 years.

A Wisconsin-based magazine publisher produced the magazine from the late 1990s until 2012, when Madavor Media, based in the Boston suburb of Braintree, purchased BirdWatching. For 35 years and counting, the magazine has been published every other month. It is available in print, through subscriptions and on newsstands, and on digital platforms, including the BirdWatching app. In the fall of 2020, we launched our membership program that offers readers full access to our paywalled articles, admission to quarterly webinars, and complimentary entries into our photo contests, among many other benefits. In addition, we publish a free e-newsletter and post original articles and slideshows here on If you have questions or comments, we’d be happy to hear from you! Here’s our contact info.
