In the last few months of 2019, BirdWatching received more than 1,000 submissions to our Bird Portrait Contest from hundreds of photographers. The contest drew an exceptional selection of photos, making the judges’ job quite difficult, and now we’re happy to present the 12 finalist images in this slideshow.
Photographer: Lindsey Stammerjohn
Location and date: Homer, Alaska, March 12, 2018
Description: The photograph was taken on March 12, 2018, while I was on a photo workshop in Homer, Alaska. In the morning we took a small fishing boat across the bay and landed on a spit of land. It had just snowed, so the beach was white blending with the gray of the sky. I was lying on the beach to be eye-level with the eagles. This eagle was curious and just kept staring as I determined my settings and took the shot.
Gear and settings: Panasonic G-9; Leica 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3; Focal length: 400mm
