Roger Tory Peterson thought Painted Buntings were beautiful, too. In his famous field guide, he called the male “the most gaudily colored North American songbird.” We think the photo above, taken by Don Martin at Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, on the South Carolina coast, shows why.
