Every day on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we share a photo of the day — a superb image from more than 20,000 photos in our Reader Galleries. Here are the images we selected in the first half of July 2020.

New to our Rarities Gallery: John Frazier spotted this Common Loon on a lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina. The loon has been there for several weeks this summer, he said.
In mid-July, John said the loon was captured and sent to the Biology Department at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. It was discovered that the bird had swallowed a fish hook. It has been rehabbed and released back onto the lake where he took the photo.
