Clapper Rail

We were birding in Rye, New Hampshire, trying to get a photo of a Merlin who was resting in an old dead tree. A passing pick-up truck spooked the Merlin before I could get his photo, but when I looked down into the marsh right near where I was standing, I noticed a bird darting rapidly in and out of the marsh grass. When he heard my camera beep, he paused for long enough for me to take a few photos. Came home, checked field guides, emailed a local birding expert, and discovered we had the good fortune of seeing a Clapper Rail – which eBird considers a rare sighting for New Hampshire. He was really fun to watch – so glad we happened upon him!
