This Western Spindalis, (formerly known as Striped-headed Tanager) is a native of the West Indies and rarely seen in Florida. This little bird was found on Leffis Key, in Manatee County, Florida, in March 2004. This bird apparently got caught up in the Spring Migration and came to Florida. This bird hung around for about two days on Leffis Key and then disappeard, not to be seen again. This image was made with a Canon EOS-3 and a Canon 300 f2.8L lens and using Fuji Velvia film. Leffis Key is on the West Central Coast of Florida, just South of the Sunshine Skyway and Ft. DeSoto Park. This was the first reported sighting of this little bird this far north.
