Allen’s Hummingbird

My favorite part of this particular day at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve was watching three male Allen’s Hummingbirds display for a passing female. I sat for an hour an a half watching them battle each other and perform the incredible pendulum-like display, which ends with the male torpedoing down on top of the female from some 30m in the air, producing a very high-pitched “chirp” as he rockets by her. Hummingbirds can sometimes be very easy to photograph once you find their favorite perches. I stood just three feet from one of this guy’s perches, and he routinely landed right in front of me, singing and preening, occasionally landing toward the sun to show off his spectacular iridescence.
