I FINALLY was able to find and photograph a charming American Dipper while in Telluride, Colorado. A month earlier, I saw one in Beaver Creek, CO but it was skittish and I couldn’t get the shot. This time, while walking along San Miguel River which flows rapidly through Telluride, I saw this American Dipper. Of course, I didn’t have my camera with me, so I ran the 1/2 mile back to the rental house to get it, ran back to the same spot, and amazingly, it was still there!! It was totally comfortable in my presence. It jumped around the rocks at water’s edge, dipped in, swam in, approached me, sang for me….in short, totally mesmerized me!! I stayed with it for about an hour. In the second photo, you can see the white eyelid, which appears as it blinks. I first thought this was a protective membrane for when it goes in the water, but now see it is clearly an eyelid. I love its little stubby tail, too.
Taken with Canon 7D, and 100-400L lens on 9/18/13 in Telluride, CO.
