American White Pelican

Location: Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, FL
White pelicans are significantly larger than brown pelicans and occur much further inland. The black flight feathers are most prominent when the wings are spread. Immature birds are mostly white but tend to be dusky on the head, back, and neck. Breeding adults develop a “plate” or “horn” on the upper part of their bill.
