Black-billed magpies commonly appear to be black and white birds with a long tail. In bright light, the wings and tail are seen to have a blue or blue-green iridescence. Despite being protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the numbers of magpies has been estimated to have decreased by about 25% since 1966.
