Burrowing owl numbers have been declining and are considered endangered or threatened in some areas. Although birds living in the west commonly inhabited prairie dog burrows, programs to limit the population of prairie dogs or ground squirrels resulted in loss of habitat, leading to declining numbers. Birds in Florida usually dig their own burrows. This owl was in a vacant lot next to a busy hotel in Florida.
