This Common Loon is feeding on a live Ruddy Turnstone in the Chinook, Washington, marina that is surrounded by rip-rap. The Ruddy is standing in the loon’s mouth. It is believed that the turnstone was feeding on the rocks at the water’s edge when the loon — doing an alligator effect (swimming low in the water with just its eyes above the surface) — came up behind the Ruddy and snatched it. It dove with it repeatedly trying to drown the Ruddy, but it proved to be a tough little shorebird. Photo taken with a Nikon Coolpix P900.
