An eared grebe in breeding plumage has a black head and neck with brown flanks. As shown in this image, the golden feathers that give the bird its name spread out down the neck from behind the bright red eye. In contrast, a horned grebe has a brown/chestnut neck and golden “horns” behind its red eyes.
