Although it was not my original intention (I was attempting to photograph the perched hawk when it flew), I realized that the image clearly shows symmetrical molting of the retrices on the tail and a swollen foot on this Red-tailed Hawk in northcentral Wisconsin. What may have been an initial failure for raptorial photography may also be a success for raptorial “science.” For the hand-held photograph, I used a Nikon D90 with a Nikkor AF-S VR 300mm lens.
