A Sandhill Crane over central Georgia.

A winter traveler to Georgia from the far reaches of Canada (the Alaska population goes to Texas). There is a small year-round resident population in deep southeast Georgia & upper northeast Florida. In recent years large flocks of the eastern population of migrating cranes have gathered farther north in central Georgia. This part of the state is home to large open fields for cotton farming & dairies. With the winter warming trend & the increasing practice of over seeding the fields, this area is becoming a prime stopover, and for some a place to linger, for the cranes before they move on to their more southern wintering grounds in Forida and the Carribean.
