Differences between the dark morphs of Swainson’s hawks and red-tailed hawks may be subtle. This image shows a couple of the characteristics useful in making the identification. Note that the tips of the wings extend beyond the end of the tail, that there are narrow horizontal bars on the tail feathers with a wider band at the end of the tail feathers. This bird was perched on a post after just having finished consuming a vole.
