Taken at Rockefeller State Park in Westchester County, NY, June 21, 2013 using a Nikon D7000 and Nikkor VR 70-300mm lens.
This bird was taking a tiny break from feeding its chicks, who happened to just come out of the nest. I was fortunate to get within 12 or 15 feet or so to get this shot, since the adult was keeping close to its chicks, who were hiding in the bush. We saw the chicks too, but couldn’t get clear shots. It was awesome to see the adult come in to feed the chicks and then go out again to find more food…it must have done this 5 or 6 times within 10 to 15 minutes of observing.
