Great Bustard

This female Great Bustard (Otis tarda) was captured from my parked car window as I drove along the road to Salto, a small village near Castro Verde in Portugal’s beautiful Alentejo region. It would normally be impossible to get this close to what is Europe’s heaviest flying bird, and indeed one of the heaviest in the world! I was lucky to cross paths with this one and create this image.. They are declining in number and are found very locally in Spain and Portugal (also E Europe). Overzealous approaches made to breeding birds causes serious problems and will cause mating in that year to fail; respect is demanded.

Taken with my Canon 7D and Canon 100-400 combo.
