Malayan Night-Herons were very rare in Taiwan a few decades ago, and often hid in dense bushes in the mountains. Birders would feel very lucky to get a photography opportunity. However, somehow these birds quietly adapted to urban environments and became a common scene in many city parks and campuses. Now even when people are within a couple of meters they still focus on finding earthworms under the lawn. Many people are curious about them and use cell phones to take their photos. They are said to be the most frequently asked bird in Taiwan’s social media. The above photo is taken in National Taiwan University’s campus.
